Digital Tintypes

Authentic Tintypes from Your Digital Files

A few years back I stumbled upon a wormhole. I won’t say exactly where, but in an old mineshaft it resides. I use this wormhole as a portal to create 19th century tintypes from 21st century photographs: Digital Tintypes, if you will.

I travel back in time with your favorite photograph to the year 1851. I personally convert it into a high resolution optical negative. The plate is prepared by pouring collodion onto a black metal plate which is sensitized in a bath of silver nitrate. The plate is then exposed in a darkroom to the optical negative. The latent image is developed to exacting standards. The result is a tintype is born from alchemy, returned through the cosmic gateway, and mailed right to your door. You receive an authentic, handmade metallic tintype with an image of pure silver.

Adorned with chemical artifacts only possible through the wet plate process, each tintype is absolutely unique and archival; it becomes an heirloom that will survive for centuries to come.

The whole process will take three to four weeks for me to complete. If you are in a hurry you can skip to the head of the line with Rush Processing.

A collage of three photos: the first shows a hand holding a smartphone displaying a child's photo with face paint, the second is a close-up of a red metal sculpture of a bird, and the third is a black and white picture of a young boy with face paint, displayed on a stand.
